In Durham, popular practices book routine cleanings weeks ahead, so call early or ask to be put on a cancellation list; emergency and walk-in clinics are the exception. Across North Carolina, a new-patient exam with X-rays and a cleaning typically runs from about $150 to $350 without insurance, and many offices publish new-patient specials on their websites. Check the listing for hours, whether the office takes your insurance or Medicaid, languages spoken, wheelchair access and parking, then confirm by phone: insurance networks and providers change more often than the listings do.

The business lists hours on 5 days of the week. On most of those days it is open 8 am–5 pm. Note that it does not open on Saturday, Sunday. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. Durham is in North Carolina, in the Southeast, where summers are long, hot and humid, winters are mild, and afternoon thunderstorms and the hurricane season from June to November can change plans at short notice. Getting around Durham is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across North Carolina's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

The dental assistant as well as the dentist were both very calming and great to work with. Both took time to explain what happens at your first visit and were also very understanding and compassionate about my toddler not wanting to sit on his own or have his teeth checked. Overall it was a great visit.

Once again, Dr. Gentry Byrd, was amazing with my son with special needs. We needed an emergency visit between his regular cleanings and she went above and beyond to make sure that my son comfortable during his procedure. Along with thoroughly explaining the process to us prior and during the appointment.

From check in to check out, my son’s first dental visit was nothing short of a dream! Walked in to immediate smiling faces, hardly had any wait and Dawn, my son’s hygienist, explained everything in a way he’d understand and made him feel much more at ease about his visit. Dr. Brecher was also just so wonderful explaining things to us while effortlessly doing my son’s exam and keeping him at ease. Overall, I cannot say enough how thankful I am for the wonderful staff here and how genuinely impressed I was.

We had a great experience with Duke Street Pediatric Dentistry in Durham, NC. My son needed fillings completed under anesthesia, and Dr. Keels did a wonderful job explaining all of our options and walking us through the procedures in a way that made everything easy to understand and less stressful. The surgical portion was completed by Dr. Burke at Duke Children’s Hospital & Health Center, and she followed through exactly with the care plan that had been discussed. She was professional, reassuring, and truly awesome throughout the entire process. I’m very grateful for the care our son received. He is now healing well and has healthy teeth again. Overall, we felt supported, informed, and in good hands from start to finish.

My son is on the spectrum so I was on the search for a dental practice that is well-versed in handling special needs and children with sensory needs. I contacted the Autism Society of NC and they provided a list of dentists in the area that specialize in this. Duke Street Pediatric was on the list and also came highly recommended from an orthodontist that I know. My son banged his front teeth and there was discoloration so I was worried about possible infection or damage. I was able to get into Duke Street the next day and they were extremely helpful and accommodating. The office is on the 2nd floor and there is a nautical and water theme. They have a very happy reception area with an aquarium, video games, stuffed pillows and lots of things to do. We were taken into an operatory room with a door (vs the open settings I have seen at other pediatric offices). The hygienists were AMAZING and asked a few questions and then we discussed how to approach the appointment. My son isn't one to lay down on the chair on his own so we did get him on the chair and did the exam and cleaning. We were then seen by Dr. Martha Ann Keels and she is the legendary dentist that opened this practice. Sh
